Slipper-shod Pastor is an outlet for the musings and rants that I can no longer inflict on my congregation since I have retired.
During the Covid lockdown, when I was frequently working from home and posting daily video messages to my congregation, I began calling myself the ‘slipper-shod pastor.’ It was both an honest description of my footwear and a not-so-subtle admission of the quality of the postings. We know slipshod work when we encounter it – doors in new houses that fail to latch, car repairs that drain the wallet without fixing the problem and a million other examples of sloppy or incomplete work inflicted upon us by indifferent practitioners of their craft.
The origin of the word “slipshod” is one who tramps around in loose shoes or slippers – one who is slovenly, ill-prepared, and unconcerned about their appearance or performance. These are my people, and this is the expectation you should bring to the writing you will find on this site.
I am a recently retired pastor with ministerial standing in the United Church of Christ and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). My ministerial career included parish ministry as well as teaching and academic administration. I am happily married, a proud grandparent, and faithful companion to a 21-pound cat named Oliver.
